Chimney Crickets: The Small Roofing Detail That Can Prevent Thousands in Water Damage

Why Custom-Built Chimney Crickets Matter for San Antonio and Central Texas Homeowners

When most homeowners think about protecting their roof, they think about shingles, gutters, and ventilation. But there's another important component that often goes unnoticed — until a leak develops.

It's called a chimney cricket, and this relatively small roofing feature plays a major role in protecting your home from water damage.

At Rio Blanco Roofing & Restoration, we take chimney protection seriously. That's why we custom-build our chimney crickets on site, creating a water diversion system specifically designed for each individual roof.

What Is a Chimney Cricket?

A chimney cricket, sometimes called a chimney saddle, is a specially constructed, peaked structure installed on the uphill side of a chimney.

Its purpose is simple: redirect rainwater around the chimney instead of allowing it to collect behind it.

Without a properly designed water diversion system, the back of a chimney can become a collection point for rainwater, leaves, dirt, and other debris.

Over time, that trapped moisture can cause significant damage to the surrounding roofing materials and potentially the structure beneath them.

Did You Know? Chimney Crickets Are Required by Building Code!

Chimney crickets aren't just an optional roofing upgrade. In certain situations, they're a building code requirement.

Under the 2024 International Residential Code (IRC), Section R903.2.2, a cricket or saddle is required on the uphill side of a chimney or other roof penetration measuring more than 30 inches wide, perpendicular to the roof slope.

For masonry chimneys, Section R1003.20 also establishes requirements for chimney crickets, including their dimensions and proper flashing and counterflashing.

These requirements exist for a reason: proper water management is essential to protecting the integrity of a roofing system.

Just because a roof hasn't leaked yet doesn't mean it's properly designed to prevent future problems.

What Happens When a Chimney Doesn't Have Proper Water Diversion?

Unfortunately, we encounter roofing systems where chimney water management has been overlooked, improperly installed, or simply left out.

The consequences can be expensive.

Water intrusion: Rainwater collecting behind the chimney can eventually find its way beneath shingles and around flashing.

Damaged decking: Prolonged moisture exposure can cause plywood or OSB roof decking to deteriorate, compromising the surrounding roof structure.

Premature material failure: Constant moisture exposure and accumulated debris can accelerate deterioration of shingles, sealants, and flashing.

Interior damage: What starts as a small roofing issue can eventually lead to stained ceilings, damaged drywall, insulation problems, and unwanted mold growth.

The frustrating part? Many of these problems are preventable with proper planning and professional installation.

Why Rio Blanco Custom-Builds Every Chimney Cricket On Site

Here's something that separates our approach from a one-size-fits-all roofing installation.

No two homes are exactly alike, and neither are their chimneys.

Roof pitch, chimney dimensions, surrounding roof geometry, and water flow patterns can vary considerably from one home to another.

That's why Rio Blanco Roofing & Restoration custom-builds every chimney cricket directly on site.

Our team evaluates the individual roofing conditions and constructs the cricket to properly redirect water around the chimney.

We also pay close attention to the metal flashing and counterflashing details that complete the water protection system.

A properly constructed chimney cricket isn't simply about meeting minimum building codes. It's about creating a dependable, long-term solution designed specifically for your home.

Custom Flashing Backed by a Lifetime Workmanship Warranty

At Rio Blanco, we believe that the details matter just as much as the finished appearance of your roof.

That's why all of our custom flashing installations are backed by our Lifetime Workmanship Warranty.

Whether we're installing a custom chimney cricket, fabricating specialty metal flashing, or addressing a complicated roof-to-wall transition, our goal is the same:

Is Your Chimney Properly Protected?

If your home has a chimney, especially one located below the roof's ridgeline, it's worth making sure the surrounding roofing system has been properly designed to manage water.

Not every chimney requires a cricket, but every chimney needs appropriate flashing and water protection.

At Rio Blanco Roofing & Restoration, we help homeowners throughout San Antonio and Central Texas identify potential roofing problems before they become expensive repairs.

Don't wait for a ceiling stain to discover a problem behind your chimney.
